Shuswap Child Youth Mental Health Substance Use Collaborative LAT

Mental Health and Substance Youth Resources banner

Doctors of BC and the BC government are committed to increasing timely access to support and services for child and youth mental health and substance in BC through funding of one of the largest initiatives of its kind - the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use (CYMHSU) Collaborative.

The Collaborative involves an unprecedented number of stakeholders - over 1,800 youth, parents, family doctors, specialists, three government ministries; RCMP/police, school counsellors, Aboriginal groups, community agencies, and many others are now involved.

Relationship-building and practical, sustainable solutions are the focus of the Collaborative’s Local Action Teams and Working Groups as they address communication barriers, service delivery gaps, and coordination of care, not just at the local level, but system-wide. The Collaborative has now spread to all regions of the province.

The purpose of the Collaborative is to share knowledge and experience with the aim of increasing the number of children, youth and their families receiving timely access to integrated mental health and substance use services and supports in the interior health region, specifically to our region, the Shuswap.

The Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Collaborative is supported by the Shared Care Committee, with additional support for specialist participation from the Specialist Services Committee. Both committees are partnerships between the Ministry of Health and Doctors of BC.

Local Action Teams

Local Action Teams (LATs) are a key component in the structure of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use (CYMHSU) Collaborative. They provide the foundation for improving timely access to support and services for local children, youth and families experiencing mental health and substance use challenges.

Teams are comprised of a diverse cross-section of mental health and substance-use service providers, stakeholders, and youth and families from the local community.

How it works
Each Local Action team commits to tackling one or two key objectives within a particular timeframe to address barriers in their community. A Collaborative Coach supports the team to help them successfully achieve their goals and measure their outcomes.
